Senior Consultant

Note: Position location is flexible, California strongly preferred (San Francisco Bay Area or Southern California)

Position Description

The Senior Consultant will work to achieve the firm's goals by providing professional consultation to nonprofit and foundation clients. S/he will work on projects in the areas of strategy, business planning, strategic restructuring (mergers and consolidation), organizational development, governance, and/or leadership.

Consulting and General Responsibilities

  • Provide direct consultation to clients in a variety of fields (human services, philanthropy, education, arts, environment, human rights, etc.) to build their capacity and increase their impact through strategy, organizational development, business planning, and strategic restructuring
  • Write compelling project proposals, develop project budgets, and negotiate contracts
  • Develop and deliver presentations / workshops / trainings (in person and via webinar)
  • Write for public distribution, enhancing the firm’s reputation for quality and innovation
  • Develop and maintain relationships with potential, current, and past clients
  • Keep pace with developments in the field through regular reading of blogs, journals, books, and other publications
  • Participate in the firm’s internal projects and ad hoc teams

Desired Skills and Experience

The ideal candidate possesses master's level academic training in business, nonprofit, or public administration and a minimum of fifteen years' social sector work experience in a combination of roles including senior management and consulting with a focus on strategy, business planning, and/or nonprofit mergers.

The successful candidate must demonstrate:

  • A deep understanding of the functioning and dynamics of foundations and nonprofit organizations
  • Knowledge of financial management practices and issues in a nonprofit context
  • Interest in learning the methodologies, tools, and processes developed by La Piana Consulting and in consistently applying these in work with clients
  • Ability to work successfully both independently and in teams
  • Ability to manage projects and lead project teams
  • Skill as a presenter and workshop developer and leader
  • Strong group facilitation skills
  • Ability to clearly and persuasively express ideas in writing
  • Excellent business development and client relationship management skills
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills
  • Proficiency in the use of common software and web-based applications

Extensive travel and a demanding schedule are required. To balance this, our consultants — who are full-time employees — work from their own home offices around the country, staying connected through a virtual network and operating infrastructure based out of our San Francisco-area headquarters. We value a culture of personal connection and host regular staff webinars, bi-monthly in-person staff meetings, and an annual staff retreat.

This is a full-time exempt position. Our compensation package includes a competitive salary plus opportunities for incentive pay, generous health and retirement benefits, and liberal paid time off (PTO).
