The Strategic Solutions Project

Strategic Solutions was a 6-year foundation-funded initiative (1998-2004) dedicated to achieving a major and lasting positive impact on the nonprofit sector's perception, understanding, and use of strategic restructuring - thereby increasing the capacity of organizations to advance their missions. Although the project ended in summer 2004, La Piana Associates continues to provide consulting services, trainings, and workshops on strategic restructuring.  For more information, visit our consulting website.

Over the grant period, the Strategic Solutions project aimed to increase the awareness of the nonprofit sector of the potential value of strategic restructuring activities, such as mergers, joint ventures, and administrative consolidations. To meet this goal, La Piana Associates developed a body of articles, case studies, and other forms of documentation of successful restructuring efforts, helping anyone interested in learning more about the topic to find the references and resources they need. We were committed to working with nonprofits, funders, consultants, local partners, students, and researchers throughout the nation and beyond. We offered a range of services to each constituency, as well as providing general information and services to the nonprofit sector as a whole.

The Strategic Solutions project was organized around three primary activities:

Research and Development
We worked to identify new and innovative nonprofit partnership models, and to develop these models into tools for use in the broader nonprofit community. We conducted scholarly inquiry on the effects of strategic restructuring on participating organizations, and develop tools for assessment, negotiation, and implementation that can be used in the field. See Research and Resources for more information.

Documentation and Dissemination
We communicated regularly and extensively with the nonprofit community about its progress and learnings. As part of this effort, we developed case studies, reports of research findings, and workbook-style publications to assist funders and nonprofit leaders in identifying and moving forward with appropriate strategic restructuring options. The Strategic Solutions website and Quarterly Newsletter were key elements of this strategy, serving as valuable resources for the nonprofit community.

Training and Workshops
Strategic Solutions offered a range of training opportunities to individuals and organizations interested in strategic restructuring. Our goal was to greatly increase the understanding and skill base of funders, nonprofit leaders, and consultants with regard to strategic restructuring. We presented workshops and conference presentations around the country, for a variety of audiences. Plus, we offered a unique Three Phase consultant training program for experienced nonprofit management consultants interested in developing specific expertise in strategic restructuring.
