How much should an individual/company charge for consulting fees?

The short answer to this is "it depends." Consulting fees vary widely according to the region, type of consulting, experience of the consultant, and the number and quality of alternatives available to an organization seeking a consultant. In a recent gathering of consultants from several different states interested in strategic restructuring, for example, we found that those attending were charging very different rates. The group felt that this was largely due to geography - that consultants in Texas, for example, were able to charge less for their work than those from, say, Northern California. This was certainly not a representative sample, however! You might try contacting a local Support Center for more information on what the "going rate" in your area. If you are a nonprofit, you might also check with your funders - they often give grants to cover the cost of consulting services for their grantees, and may be able to give you an idea of what their grantees are paying for certain types of consulting.
