The Negotiations Process

What is the merger process? What steps are involved?

There are five stages to a merger process: Internal Self-Assessment, Inter-Organizational Assessment, Discussion of Forms of Partnership, Negotiation and Communication, and Implementation. Brief descriptions of what is involved in each stage can be found in the Five Stages of Strategic Restructuring. For more information on any particular stage or step, feel free to contact us or post another question. If you are looking for a very detailed outline of the steps involved, you may want to refer to David La Piana's The Nonprofit Mergers Workbook; it walks you through the entire merger process in a detailed, step-by-step fashion, and includes worksheets for use by the boards of the merging organizations.
