Is it appropriate to give severance packages to departing employees?

Yes, it is. It is important to treat people well at all points in this process, and to do whatever possible to help smooth the transition for those employees who find themselves leaving. Making this a priority can help assuage employees’ fears as well as to set a tone of respect and understanding. It may also be appropriate to offer job search support for those who are leaving, or pay for a session with a career counselor who may help the person identify what he or she would like to pursue next.
